Description:

After an introduction to safety, tools and equipment, you will explore the qualities and working habits of molten glass. We will be working with torches and "soft" glass, which is a soda-lime glass. The first day will be a series of demonstrations, and practice sessions to gain a basic knowledge of how molten glass behaves. The second day, students can practice and explore at their own pace, with me available for any demo or information sharing of my knowledge as each student and the class decide.

Class Goals:

The goal of this class is to get the student to the point they can work on a torch safely, and with the skills to complete small beads and sculpture out of glass.

Prerequisites:

Some previous experience working with a torch or completion of the Hot Glass: Curiosity class is recommended, but not necessary. This 2 day class is intense, and some working knowledge is helpful.

Materials:

A $30 materials fee, payable to the instructor, will be collected the first day of class. All tools, materials, and equipment will be provided by the instructor and Artisan's Asylum.

Instructor Biography:

With a background in Fine Art and Jewelry design and many years as a Gemologist, Joanne Soroka wanted to be able to supply all the materials for her jewelry designs. She turned to Lampworking to learn how to make her own beads. Once she put her first rod in the flame, she was smitten. Joanne has now been melting glass for 9 years. She studied in Murano Italy with Lucio Bubbaco, a master flameworker who has been trained by some of the finest lampworkers in the field today. Joanne herself has now taught many students of her own, of all ages. Her work has been published in books and magazines, and her beads are shown and sold in many galleries and shops around the country.
